REFLECTIONS ON THE CORONAVIRUS – DAY 20 –
In January 2020, one of my daughters gave birth to a baby girl and I had the privilege of being present. Having experienced natural childbirth five times, I had some wisdom and tools I could offer. Mainly, I wanted to give my presence and love, and to be a calm, peaceful, empowering influence. Her partner and I took turns rubbing her back and applying firm pressure to her low back during contractions. Later, she said our touch was her pain medication.
Earlier in my life, each of my children each went through a period of teenage rebellion. The first time going through this was particularly rough. My daughter and I fought regularly, cried a great deal, and felt lots of pain, anguish, and grief. I was at my wit’s end, and so I prayed.
I heard this message: Remember how painful, scary, and intense birthing her was? Yet that process of birth was necessary for her survival outside the womb, and her journey through the birth canal provided her many health benefits. Now she is undergoing a spiritual birth, which has its own kind of birth pains, contractions, and journey out of the womb. A scary, confusing, and painful time for you both, this journey is preparing her for the responsibilities of adulthood and providing her strength, confidence, and independence.
I shared this message with my daughter. It gave meaning to and a common understanding for the process we were in. Although it didn’t diminish its intensity, it made a world of difference.
The birth process is intense, full of pain, uncertainty, potential risk. Often viewed as an initiation, it is not comfortable. Knowing you are birthing a baby, or ‘fledging’ your teenager, can make it all worthwhile.

We are feeling the intensity, pain, and fear that comes with it. People are getting sick, people are dying, and a novel Coronavirus is spreading all over the globe, along with terror, panic, and uncertainty. Businesses and schools have shut down, people are sheltering in place, and the medical industry and its personnel are severely stressed.
Can we be present for the intensity of pain and suffering others are going through? Can we make space and find support for our own feelings? At the same time, what if we were to find a deeper meaning for what is unfolding? What if we were to come together to help birth this new world? If the answer is yes, it makes sense that the journey begins inside each of us.
When we understand we are in a birth or initiation process, it doesn’t lessen the intensity of the process, it doesn’t decrease the risks, but it does put it all in perspective. We know it will be worth it.
