THE INSIDE OUT APPROACH: From Behavior Focused to Mind Focused
We begin with the understanding our inner reality is primary and the outer is but a reflection. So, when we try to control or change the outer world, it’s as if we’re trying to alter our reflection in the mirror while expecting our physical face to transform. The fact is we have little to no power over the physical realm—other people, events, the weather, etc. Therefore, whatever it is we are trying to control “out there,” we will find it is easier and more fruitful to instead change our mind about it.
Where do we have power? In our internal reality. Here, we can decide how to perceive people and situations, the meaning we give them, and our response to them. Here, we can choose our thoughts, emotions, and reactions. When we first and foremost stay focused on our circle—our inner world and sphere of personal sovereignty—we take back our freedom and power. When we look inside our inner world to define who we are and our worth, tap into our wisdom and discover our own answers, and recognize the purpose and flow for our life, we come into harmony with all of life. We come into harmony with all our relationships. We feel connected, empowered, and peaceful.
LOVE WITH AN UNDEFENDED HEART: From Blame Paradigm to Undefended Love Paradigm
“Exposing ourselves to what we expect will be emotional annihilation is not easy. It means staying with an issue in the presence of our partners when continuing is the hardest thing to do. It means stretching to stay open even if shutting down is our main line of defense. It means speaking about what we are feeling when we are paralyzed with fear. And it means remaining fully present without lashing out when we experience our partners as critical, blaming, or attacking. It even means staying with feeling bad, inadequate, less than or lacking without doing something to distract ourselves so we can feel better.”
– Undefended Love by Jett Psaris and Marlena S. Lyons
When we embrace our interconnectedness, we naturally move out of the us-versus-them mindset and away from relating to the world as a battlefield. When we realize who we truly are cannot be harmed (since we are not our bodies), we can begin to deconstruct the elaborate defense patterns and the walls around our heart. When we recognize and honor love as the most powerful force in the universe, we undergo a paradigm shift, moving from blame to undefended love. With this shift, we release the attack-defend mode of being along with the notion there is a self that needs protecting.
LIVE AS A CREATOR/DIRECTOR: From Playing Victim to Being 100% Responsible
Most of us desire to be more empowered in our life. This naturally occurs as we ground within ourselves and access our innate creative power and wisdom. When we allow our innate wisdom to guide us, we can see our way past old habits of defensiveness and control. We can see our way past acting as victim to the world, and thereby give up related feelings of fear, helplessness, and oppression. Getting in touch with the creative force within inevitably leads to encounters with the larger creative force of the universe. When we allow this to open us up, when we fully trust instead of clinging to a need for safety and being attached to outcomes, all at once we discover we have more power and influence over our experiences and relationships than we realize.
With power comes responsibility. When we take up that responsibility, which we’re not entirely sure we want, the subconscious blame games no longer have any appeal to us. We step up, take the risk, and decide we are able to respond to whatever life throws at us. With this one decision, we stop engaging in power struggles, lose interest in “prove you love me” charades, and, no longer needing other characters in our drama, we withdraw our projections. Next thing we know, we’ve been appointed as the director of our life and put in charge of our reality and our relationships. We now have at our fingertips the creative power and all the resources we need to mold our destiny.
