REFLECTIONS ON THE CORONAVIRUS – DAY 34 –
Years ago, two brothers came to see me. They both grew up in the same home with the same parents, attended the same schools, experienced the same life events. They were only a couple of years apart. Yet, they each described a completely different childhood.
I witnessed a similar phenomenon when working with couples. Both people would describe their version of a life event or interaction, and their versions would vary to a greater or lesser degree. Often, the versions varied wildly, which surprised me. Then I stumbled upon this teaching.
Everything is neutral. Every object, every body, every situation is neutral. Whatever we encounter has no meaning except for the meaning we give it. Thus, each person involved may assign very diverse meanings to the same interaction.
In the past, we drew conclusions, formed beliefs, and developed thought patterns. In the present, we draw on these past conclusions, beliefs, and thought patterns to create meaning out of whatever we encounter. We are not truly seeing what is right before us. Instead, we are making assumptions and seeing projections from our past.
Then we wonder why we keep repeating our past over and over.

It is neutral. It has no meaning except for the meaning we give it. Most of us will see the situation through the lens of our past. This will dictate how we feel and respond.
The key to healing is the same, whether it’s related to how you show up for this pandemic or how you show up in your relationships. Come into the Present. See things exactly as they appear before you.
Coming into the Present may feel as if you are stepping into the abyss or void. Well, you have been using the past to defend against an unknown future. Up to this point, you thought it better to hold onto a known past, even one you’ve outgrown and that’s dysfunctional, than to move into a future where you understand little and have even less control.
Is it worth stepping into the present moment? Absolutely. You will free yourself from the prison of your mind, gain awareness of the reality around you, and awaken to who you truly are.
Become fully present. Easier said than done, right? It starts these practices: Question your assumptions and beliefs. Realize how little you really understand of what appears before you. Clear your mind of all past associations. Remember, everything is neutral.
